The Book as Sculptural Medium Part 1:
Box Construction workshop with David Francis


Date: Saturday & Sunday, March 29 & 30
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
Location: 2100 Building, 2100 24th Ave. S. (in Rainier Valley), Seattle, WA [map]
Cost: $120 + $10 materials fee

Using cedar shakes, wire nails, hinges & clasps, and wood glue, participants in this two day workshop will build small boxes (up to 15" x 15"; pre-made cigar boxes can also be used) that are then collaged with a variety of text-based material (such as 18th and 19th century books and other nostalgia / ephemera, handwritten documents, found text, maps, typewriter art, small mirrors, hand-cranks, wire screens, curtains and gauze fabrics, needle & thread, etc.) Final steps include glossing, encaustic, varnishing, painting and/or oven-heating in the manner of Joseph Cornell et al.
 
Instructor Biography: Currently an Instructor in Diverse Disciplines at Pratt Fine Arts Center, David Francis also taught at Cornish College of the Arts for seven years and in Hungary and Poland as a Fulbright Scholar. A board member of CoCA, he has published some 25 poems in literary journals like Ploughshares, Iowa Review, Verse, Poetry Northwest, and many others.

SCBA Cancellation/Refund Policy:
• If your class is canceled by SCBA, you will promptly receive a full refund.
• If you cancel more than 21 days prior to the first day of class, you will receive a full refund.
• If you cancel 21 days or less before the first day of class, you will receive a credit for the amount of the original class to be used for any future SCBA class offered within one year from the date of the cancellation.
• If you cancel less than 48 hours prior to the first day of class, no credit or refund will be granted. However, it may be possible to obtain handouts for the class pending approval from the instructor and SCBA.
• If you do not appear in class and we have not heard from you, no credit or refund of any kind will be given.
